The Daily 5 provides teachers with a flexible, research-based structure for organizing and managing a differentiated literacy block.  This structure has been successfully implemented by teachers who use a basal series or leveled books, as the basis for their instruction.  Teachers and schools that implement The Daily 5 as a regular part of their literacy plan:

·      Spend less time on classroom management, and more time teaching
·      Help students develop independence, stamina, and accountability

·      Provide students with meaningful time for practicing reading, writing, oral dialogue and math

·      Increase the time teachers spend with students (1:1 and in small groups)

·      Improve school-wide achievement and success in literacy and math

Participants in this one day session will learn about the structures and strategies that make the model work, the research that has grounded its development, and will explore resources to help them get each component of the Daily 5 structure up and running in their classroom.  We will use the 2nd edition of The Daily 5, by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, as we learn about each of the five components of the structure:

·     Read to self
·     Read with someone

·     Writing

·     Word work

·     Listening to reading
