6 and 12 Strategies for Behavior Interventions

DAY ONE - October 16
6 Early Stage, Highly Structured, Behavior Interventions

You have classroom expectations and a classroom management system in place. For most students it works well, yet you have a couple of students who are struggling with their behavior. You know a referral is too premature but you want to help these students with their behavior and academics. In this workshop educators will work through 6 behavior interventions that will help reduce the behavior and be able to collect baseline data for future reference.

The 6 interventions are from the book Interventions: Evidence-Based Behavioral Strategies for Individual Students by Randy Sprick, Ph.D., founder of Safe and Civil Schools.

These early interventions:

  • Have been shown to be effective based on multiple studies. They are the easiest interventions to implement.

* Planned Discussion
* Academic Assistance
* Goal Setting
* Data Collection and Debriefing
* Increasing Positive Interactions
* STOIC Analysis and Intervention

  • Can be implemented without needing highly specialized training.
  • Are implemented prior to seeking help from either a school team or an interventionist unless the student's behavior is so physically dangerous or severely disruptive that seeking special assistance in a Code Red emergency is necessary.

DAY TWO - November 20
12 Highly Structured, Individual Behavior Interventions

In this workshop Tier 2/3 behavior interventionists or members of a school-based team are trained in how to implement 12 behavioral interventions. A classroom teacher would need assistance in implementing one of these interventions. Highly structured interventions need to be a collaborative effort
between the classroom teacher and the interventionist or team to help the teacher select the most appropriate
intervention/s to implement.

The 12 interventions are powerful tools that are more time-intensive to plan and more time-consuming to implement. These interventions are from the book by Randy Sprick, Interventions: Evidence-Based Behavioral Strategies for Individual Students, from Safe and Civil Schools.

Unlike early-stage interventions, highly structured interventions are not presented in an order of implementation ease. Instead, each intervention targets a specific factor or skill and can serve as a stand-alone intervention or be included with other interventions in a more comprehensive plan.

Interventions include:

  • Managing Physically Dangerous Behavior
  • Managing Severely Disruptive Behavior
  • Managing the Cycle of Emotional Escalation
  • Cueing and Precorrecting
  • Self-Monitoring and Self-Evaluation
  • Positive Self-Talk and Attribution Training
  • Teaching Replacement Behaviors
  • Functional Communication
  • Structured Reinforcement Systems
  • Defining Limits and Establishing Consequences
  • Relaxation and Stress Management
  • Internalizing Problems (Depression and Anxiety) and Mental Health
