Throughout this workshop, we will explore ways to design a unit of study that honors rigorous standards and transference of skills while still honoring the importance of exposing students to significant texts. We will study mentor units to see how to blend core texts with high—quality, engaging, current texts. We will explore planning techniques, instructional contexts and methods for ensuring that students carry the cognitive load.
Teachers will develop a set of “filters” to use when determining the effectiveness of a unit’s design. This collaborative session will include some supported work time to get started on the process of “redecorating” a unit based on the learning of the day.
We will draw on the work of Kate Roberts, Cris Tovani, Samantha Bennett, Kelly Gallagher, Penny Kittle, Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe.

THIS WORKSHOP IS A GOOD FIT FOR:
The teacher who values a core text, but wants to ensure that students are engaged and invested in their learning. In addition, this workshop will help teachers who want to increase the engagement of students. The workshop requires flexibility in thinking and a willingness to experiment with one new unit design that can be implemented yet this year or the start of next year.
