Effective school research has shown that, in order to improve student outcomes and close achievement gaps, it is vital for us to focus on schools - as a system. Typically, educators are inclined toward looking at individual students, classes or programs; however, we less frequently consider the school as a coordinated system. In this session, participants will learn how systems thinking and deliberate system support can be leveraged for school improvement.

This session will focus on Systems Thinking – how to understand and improve the essential system components to propel your educational organization toward excellence. The emphasis will be on understanding the critical role of systems structures and routines for creating the conditions that support continuous school improvement.  Participants will consider research and practical examples of system structures and routines that have led to accelerated student growth especially for traditionally vulnerable groups who demonstrate achievement gaps.

Presenters: Ed O'Connor and Elizabeth Freeman
