Fountas and Pinnell developed an indispensable instructional tool to support all teachers in their work with readers. This workshop series will dissect this tool so teachers may: 1) develop a theory of the reading process; 2) acquire a detailed lens for assessing students; and, 3) plan and deliver responsive lessons that will propel readers forward.

Workshop topics

Day 1 – Introduction to the Systems of Strategic Action

  • What are the systems?
  • How do I use the systems to create personal meaning?
  • How do my systems compare to a colleague’s systems?
  • How do I use observations to develop an understanding of readers’ systems of strategic action?
  • How do I use readers’ writing-about-reading samples to develop an understanding of their systems of strategic action?

Day 2 – Demonstrating Systems of Strategic Action

  • Demonstration Lessons: Narrative Text
  • Demonstration Lessons: Information Text
  • Demonstration Lessons: Persuasive / Argumentative Text
  • Demonstration Lessons: Tests

Day 3 – Enhancing Existing Systems of Strategic Actions

  • Taking a Growth Mindset stance before instruction
