Fountas and Pinnell developed an indispensable instructional tool to support all teachers in their work with readers. This workshop series will dissect this tool so teachers may: 1) develop a theory of the reading process; 2) acquire a detailed lens for assessing students; and, 3) plan and deliver responsive lessons that will propel readers forward.
Workshop topics
Day 1 – Introduction to the Systems of Strategic Action
- What are the systems?
- How do I use the systems to create personal meaning?
- How do my systems compare to a colleague’s systems?
- How do I use observations to develop an understanding of readers’ systems of strategic action?
- How do I use readers’ writing-about-reading samples to develop an understanding of their systems of strategic action?
Day 2 – Demonstrating Systems of Strategic Action

Cancellation Policy:
Any registration cancellation must be received at least 8 business days before event in order for a full conference fee refund to be issued (full refunds do not include service fees. Service fees are nonrefundable).Registration cancellations received 1-7 business days before an event, a refund, minus $50 for each participant, will be issued. Persons who are registered, but not in attendance on the day of the session ("no call, no show") will be charged the full registration fee. CESA 6 reserves the right to cancel any session due to insufficient enrollment. Participants will be notified by email if a cancellation occurs.
