With so much emphasis on literacy in the elementary grades, how do you give math, science, and social studies the attention they deserve? How do you make content count without sacrificing the precious time spent on nurturing literacy development? This one-day workshop will give participants an innovative approach to disciplinary literacy. There will be time to try out the activities to promote disciplinary literacy skills in math, science, and social studies. Teachers will rethink content literacy instruction with K-4 learners in mind.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Understand comprehension demands through the grades.
  • Learn activities that will prompt students to communicate content knowledge orally.
  • Create content connection activities through writing.
  • Develop instructional strategies for viewing skills when students are in content reading books.

Who should attend?

K–4th grade teachers, reading specialists, curriculum and instruction coordinators, and principals.

Participants should bring:

A laptop and a math, a science, and a social studies textbook or resource.
