How do you choose mentor texts for your students?  How do you mine them for the craft lessons you want your students to learn?  In this workshop, we will discuss picture books as teaching tools and look at ways to integrate them into your curriculum and classroom discussions.  We will also look at routines and classroom procedures to help students focus on their writing during the independent writing portion of writing workshop and this will help you prepare for small-group instruction.

Participants will:

  • Make strong reading-writing connections for students.
  • Learn how to use mentor texts to expand the range and quality  of students’ writing
  • Craft small-group lessons from picture books.
  • Establish routines and procedures for writing with mentor texts

Who should attend?

K-5 Classroom Teachers, Literacy Coaches, Reading Specialists, Principals, Curriculum Directors

Participants should bring:

A laptop, writing unit of study, and mentor texts.
