Presenter: Mike McGowan
Student leaders are change agents in a school’s culture. To combat bullying, harassment and chemical abuse; staff, students and parents need to be on the same page. During this workshop Mr. McGowan will provide an overview of today’s culture and how it contributes to troublesome issues facing schools and communities. To combat these issues, Mike proposes using student leaders to foster a more positive school climate.
Peer leaders include students who naturally tend to be leaders but need to develop certain skills to be at their best. This training will give them those skills. Examples of peer leaders may include students who have designated roles and responsibilities such as class officers, club officers, student council members, and/or sports team captains.
This day will be a combination of information and interaction for these peer leaders. It is designed to be an enjoyable learning experience and will include activities that teach inclusion, communication, decision-making, and team building. Time will be given to allow school teams to begin developing an action plan they can carry back to school.
Student Teams consist of 6 to 8 students grades 7-12 + 1 advisor. Additional attendees will each be charge $15 each to cover the cost of food.
