This online foundational course thoroughly analyzes the features and characteristics that comprise autism spectrum disorders ASD). The history of ASD and the current research on ASD will be explored, as ell.  This course will provide participants with an evidence-based practice approach for designing and implementing appropriate educational programs for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This evidence-based practice approach allows for the implementation of a variety of instructional strategies utilizing the student’s strength in processing visual
information. 

Workshop objectives:

Ø Develop an understanding of the unique features and characteristics associated with autism spectrum disorder.

Ø Learn the DPI educational eligibility criteria for identifying a child with an autism spectrum disorder.  

Ø Explore the unique learning/thinking/processing differences associated with autism spectrum disorders.  

Ø Review sensory, communication, cognitive and social differences in relation to appropriate accommodations/modifications to increase the child’s understanding and functional/meaningful independence.  

Ø Increase awareness of the educational implications for students on the spectrum.

Ø Develop an understanding of an evidence-based practice approach for designing an appropriate educational program for students with ASD.

Ø Learn how to effectively organize various educational environments to increase comprehension and independent functioning for students with ASD.

Ø Learn how to use various visual instructional strategies to address the features and characteristics of ASD.

Graduate credit optional: 1 graduate credit will be available through UW-Oshkosh for a cost of $200.00 (payable to UW-Oshkosh). Please contact the instructor and/or program assistant for registration paperwork.

Cancellation Policy:

Any registration cancellation must be received 48 business hours before the scheduled date for a refund to be issued. Because attendance at most sessions is limited, persons registering and not in attendance on the day of the session will be charged the full registration fee. CESA 6 reserves the right to cancel any session due to insufficient enrollment. Participants will be notified by email or phone if a cancellation occurs.
