Description:
Do you ever hear “I don’t get it” or “I don’t know what to do.” or even, “I know the answer, I just don’t know how to explain it.”?  As teachers, it is important to help our students address their struggles and recognize that there are choices in how they respond.  Research suggests that struggling to make sense of math is necessary to learn mathematics with understanding and to learn mathematics deeply.

NCTM in Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All (2014) identified the support of productive struggle in learning mathematics as one of the eight important teaching practices.

Workshop Objectives:
Explore answers to the following questions:

  • What is productive struggle and why does it matter?
  • What does productive struggle look like in a classroom?
  • How do we create an environment for nurturing productive struggle?
  • What are student and teacher behaviors of productive struggle?

Who should attend?
Administrators, teacher leaders, classroom teachers and school-based teams
