Description:
Mathematics plays a significant role in almost every area of life. Math is the language of the universe. This workshop will engage participants in strategies that bring math to life. We will explore how classroom environments can help students experience what it means to understand math concepts and apply them to new situations. We will use some of the latest research to learn what students need to learn and how teachers can teach for comprehension. We will engage in activities that foster the learning of math concepts for students while they share, discuss and defend ideas. Participants will learn the connection these all have to our student sub-groups. We will share how classroom research questions, that are stimulating for teachers, may support SLOs and school improvement plans.

Workshop objectives

  • Learn what is needed to provide a conducive learning environ-ment for students.
  • Understand that math should make sense for your students.
  • Learn how to provide what students need to make sense of math.
  • Practice activities that foster the learning of math concepts.
  • Discuss what research says based on application.
  • Explore classroom data and how it can be used to help students learn and teachers grow as professionals.
