This event is presented by CESA 6 collaboration with Mathematics Institute of WI (formerly Brookhill).

This three-day seminar focuses on mathematical content knowledge around numerical and algebraic expressions and equations, while diving deeply into mathematical representations. Visual representations of mathematics help students deepen their understanding of mathematics. This seminar looks at various ways to represent the mathematical understanding, including visual, symbolic, and physical representations. These various representations are intertwined with the mathematical content to develop the knowledge of teachers aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Specifically, participants will study the development of algebraic thinking in grades 6–8 drawing from CCSSM domains of Expressions and Equations. Emphasis will be placed on focus standards from this domain that are essential in the progression of algebraic reasoning across the grades. In addition, participants will deepen their understanding of the different mathematical representations and extend their knowledge of meaningful contexts that are fundamental to these standards.

Workshop objectives

  • Participants will use various mathematical representations of expressions and equations and see the connections between them.
  • Participants will become familiar with the progression of the Common Core State Standards for expressions and equations across grades 6–8.
  • Participants will develop an understanding of the role of using multiple representations and contextual situations to support student algebraic learning.

Who should attend?
Math Educators, Math Coordinators, Interventionists, Administrators and Math Enthusiasts!
