This introductory workshop will present principles, activities and techniques to integrate forestry education into the K-12 classroom. The workshop will demonstrate how to teach students about the importance of Wisconsin’s forests to our ecological, economic, and social well-being. The training is designed for the K-12 classroom teacher pursuing the skills and methodologies needed to teach their students using forestry in both indoor and outdoor classrooms. Participants will receive a CD-ROM of LEAF’s K-12 Forestry Lesson Guide, which contains engaging standards-based, grade-specific lessons appropriate for integration into science, social studies, agriculture, mathematics, technology education, ELA, and general elementary curricula.

Workshop Objectives

  • Participants will gain basic understanding of the ecosystem functions, values, management, and issues of Wisconsin forests.
  • Participants will become familiar with materials in the LEAF Lesson Guide and learn how those materials can be used in their own classroom.
  • Participants will be able to identify forest-based opportunities for integrating 21 st century skills into their existing curriculum.
