Native American History, Culture & Other Teachings

MAY 8, 2017

CESA #12 Conference Center

9:00 a.m. - 3;00 p.m.(Registration is at 8:30 a.m)

I am a red man. If the Great Spirit had desired me to be a white man, He would have made me so in the first place. He put in your heart certain wishes and plans, in my heart he put other and different desires. Each man is good in His sight. It is not necessary for Eagles to be Crows.

 – Sitting Bull, Lakota

This workshop centers on the theme of Sitting Bull’s quote. In what ways has the US honored and respected those cultural differences and in what ways has it acted in direct violation of this?  How has that impacted Native people?  We will also look at how, moving forward, we can we acknowledge and respect each other’s differences and boundaries, but still find common ground for discussion and knowledge-building. We will look at Native history, the effects of historical trauma, an overview of Wisconsin tribes, the Seven Traditional Teachings and how those can be incorporated into the school or classroom.
