CHANGING EXPECTATIONS! "HOW DO I DECIDE WHAT TO TEACH NEXT?"
JANUARY 5TH, 2017

There has been an increased emphasis on academic achievement for students with intellectual disabilities. The emphasis on Common Core Essential Elements and access to general education curricula has made determining IEP goals more complex. Why is there no guidebook for balancing functional goals and academics? How can teachers meet the expectations in these two seemingly contradictory directions? How do we determine what to teach next? This session will explore existing curriculum development as well as long-range planning tools that will assist teachers in creating IEPs that meet students needs in functional and academic areas. Participants should bring copies of redacted student IEPs.

Presenter: Denise Clark is a professor in the Department of Special and Early Childhood Education at UW Oshkosh. She teaches courses on students with significant disabilities, American Sign Language, students with communication and motor Issues, and family advocacy. Her areas of research include literacy instruction for adolescents with significant disabilities and family advocacy. Prior to receiving her doctorate in Special Education from the University of Florida and working in higher education, Denise was a teacher of second through eighth-grade students with significant disabilities in upstate New York.

Cost: $75.00 per person
