This one day workshop will provide participants with current best-practice research on the importance of academic discourse in the secondary classroom. Most importantly, participants will delve into strategies for setting the stage for academic discourse, holding students accountable for their collective thinking and assessing learning through monitoring discussions.

Workshop objectives

Teachers will:

  • Understand the research behind and the importance of academic discourse at the high school level
  • Understand how academic discourse facilitates learning
  • Plan structures to support academic discourse and develop an instructional plan for implementing in their content/classroom
  • Consider strategies for creating an environment that encourages academic discourse in all content areas
  • Gain knowledge of how to evaluate academic discourse

Who should attend?

9th - 12th grade teachers, literacy coaches, instructional leaders

Cancellation Policy:

Any registration cancellation must be received at least 8 business days before event in order for a full conference fee refund to be issued (full refunds do not include service fees. Service fees are nonrefundable).Registration cancellations received 1-7 business days before an event, a refund, minus $50 for each participant, will be issued. Persons who are registered, but not in attendance on the day of the session ("no call, no show") will be charged the full registration fee. CESA 6 reserves the right to cancel any session due to insufficient enrollment. Participants will be notified by email if a cancellation occurs.
