Description

Elementary teachers face an important challenge: teaching children how to read while enabling them to build good habits so they fall in love with reading. Many teachers find the independent Reading Workshop to be the component of reading instruction that meets this challenge. Sessions are devoted to the individual units of study as well as examples of mini-lessons and reading conferences.

Session topics:

Session 1: Structures for Success

  • Exploring the Reading Units of Study Resources
  • Groundwork for success - the underlying structure of the workshop
  • Physical setup of your Reading World:  classroom libraries, Student Book Selections and Reading Volume
  • Zooming in on the mini-lesson formats
  • Understanding the Learning Progress for your first Unit of Study

Session 2: The Learning Progressions

  • Exploring the Learning Progressions
  • Connecting the unit sessions to the Learning Progressions
  • Performance Assessments
  • Conferring and Small Group Instruction

Session 3: Assessment and More

  • Assessing Across the Reading Progressions
  • The Interactive Read Aloud & Writing About Reading
  • Book Clubs
  • Fleshing Out an If…Then Unit of Study
