Participants have choices among the primary offerings (July 19th & 20th): Units of Study Writing K-5, Reading and Writing Workshop in the Middle, and for a 9-12 focus, Literacy with Outcomes: Providing Direction for Everyone. Participants can also wrap up their Washburn Literacy experience by selecting some unique offerings on the third day (July 21st) or choose to dig deeper into the learning from primary offerings with the support of presenters. Join us for a focus on intentional literacy practices with practitioner presenters!

JULY 19th & 20th

Option A:  Lucy Calkins' Units of Study Writing K-5

This K-5 focused two-day workshop will center on the work of Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study Writing.  Using the fundamental components of writing workshop, participants will learn about the components of writing workshop and weave in an approach to help teach opinion/argument, information, and narrative writing.  Participants will also examine the role of performance assessments and work with exemplar texts that model progressions across the grade level.  Through connections with other Units of Study, users will build a deeper understanding of teaching and learning in writing workshop.

Option B:  Writing and Reading Workshop in the Middle

Participants will learn several ways to engage students in higher-level thinking through hands-on projects while covering CCSS ELA content.  Participants will also increase their knowledge of ELA resources through book talks, viewing useful websites, and sharing of best practices.  Through dialogue and collaboration, participants will leave with the materials, knowledge, and resources to teach engaging and meaningful reading lessons that will increase their students’ motivation and achievement in reading.  Participants will also learn several ways to increase student motivation toward writing.  This workshop will work to increase participant knowledge of writing resources through participation in writing activities, viewing useful websites, and sharing of best practices.  Participants will leave with the materials, knowledge, and resources to teach writing in a way that is exciting for students.

Option C:  Literacy with Outcomes:  Providing Disciplinary Direction for Everyone

Through the lens of real-world examples, research-based strategies, and technology-based solutions, this workshop will challenge participants to create purpose and direction in literacy instruction for students and teachers in the secondary environment.  Participants will explore and create strong, standards-based learning outcomes and explore how to effectively create and use rubrics to guide planning, instruction, feedback, and reflection for both students and teachers.  Participants will leave this workshop with classroom-ready strategies and tools for effective literacy instruction and assessment.
