Audience: middle & high school teachers, literacy coaches, reading specialists, and administrators

Watch a classroom of your students peering into their books to read an assignment. Many students will appear to be reading when in reality they are simply looking for the answers to questions to complete an assignment. Is comprehension truly taking place? As they encounter increasingly more sophisticated and diverse texts across the curriculum, adolescent readers need to be “mentored” on how to effectively read texts in history, science, literature, mathematics, and other subjects. Students are often confounded by the amount of information they encounter in a textbook, and they are unable to differentiate key ideas from supporting detail. As a result, they benefit from classroom strategies that guide their excursion through content texts. This workshop will focus on comprehension strategies that help students unlock academic discourse in science, social studies, technical subjects, and mathematics, as well as the fictional texts read for learning in content subjects.

In particular, the study guide will be reconceptualized as a vehicle for guiding and supporting comprehension. Carefully constructed study guides, such as the Interactive Reading Guide, are powerful vehicles for incorporating comprehension strategies into the instruction of course content. Teachers participating in this workshop are introduced to comprehension strategies that support all students, from struggling to strong readers, as they develop into more competent readers and thinkers capable of meeting the challenges of the middle and high school curriculum. During the workshop, instructional strategies that can be applied throughout the curriculum are modeled with texts representing a variety of content areas.
