Develop your skills as a literacy coach! Learn with a cohort of colleagues in face-to-face, hybrid or online courses taught by UW Oshkosh’s nationally recognized faculty. In this program you will earn a Literacy Coaching Certificate through UW Oshkosh, with the support of CESA 5.
Program emphases:
• Literacy coaching processes and practices that lead to coaching success
• Formats and structures for effective literacy coaching programs
• Key topics addressed in partnerships between teachers and coaches
• Practical experience in authentic coaching partnerships

What is it? A 9-credit graduate-level program leading to a Certificate in Literacy Coaching
Who should participate? Cohorts of Wisconsin educators holding a 316 reading teacher OR 17 reading specialist license
How many credits?

More detailed information below:

Dates: January-July 2016

Cost: Open based on how much a district wants to reimburse participants- numbers to consider:

Cost per credit, $249

Registration Link for UW-Oshkosh: Click here for registration directions.

  • Class is held on four Saturdays for approximately 6 hours per meeting- January 23, Feb 20, Mar 5, Apr 23- if Districts reimburse a per hour amount for those taking PD outside of normal work hours

The course has two tracks:

  • The Literacy Coaching Certificate is available only to those who have a 316 or 17 license. Therefore, only those participants in the cohort with the appropriate license will be eligible for the Literacy Coaching Certificate.
  • The Instructional Coaching Certificate: The process of developing a second coaching certificate, for those who are coaching but do not have the literacy focus is being discussed. This will take a few months and we can't say that we have it until it is all approved, but it is something that may be available by spring and would be offered to those in the program who have begun the first course and want to continue for a certificate. Otherwise, those without a 316 or 17 could take the courses but would not receive the certificate but would still get graduate credit for participating in the course.

Class participants should attend the WSRA conference (register here for WSRA) February 4-6 and attend the conference sessions related to coaching or leadership when possible. (If a participant cannot attend the conference, an alternative activity, involving shadowing practicing literacy coaches, will be discussed at the first class meeting.)

* The first course will be adapted so it applies to coaches of all stripes, not just literacy coaches.

Cancellation Policy: Registered participants will receive a full refund if they cancel before 10 working days before an event, minus any material costs that have already been incurred. Because of our commitment to the trainer and the food vendor, participants who cancel less than 10 working days or do not attend, will be billed the full fee. CESA 5 reserves the right to cancel any event. Registered participants will be notified via email if a cancellation occurs and will receive a full refund. Inclement weather policy: Every effort will be made to hold an event. CESA 5 will notify participants via email as soon as possible if an event has been canceled due to weather conditions.
