All the talk of closing the achievement gap in schools obscures a more fundamental issue: do the grades we assign to students truly reflect the extent of their learning? In this session, we will utilize the lively and eye-opening book by educator Myron Dueck, Grading Smarter, Not Harder to discuss the assessment policies that teachers adopt can actually prove detrimental to student motivation and achievement. We will look at grading experts' research and discuss how we can tailor policies to address what really matters: student understanding of content.
In the afternoon session, we'll hear "The Poynette Story". Leaders will share their experiences in establishing a K-12 district in which standards-based grading is the norm. Participants will select a K-5 or 6-12 discussion group where leaders will share their experiences in establishing a K-12 district in which standards-based grading is the norm. They will provide authentic examples of how Poynette brings theory to practice. You will be able to ask and get answers to questions such as:
1. What were your initial steps in getting started?
2. How are behaviors reported?
3. How does the district inform parents of grading for learning practices?
4. What "pushback" was received by parents? Students?
5. What does a K-5 and 6-12 report look like?
6. How does a 9-12 report card meet expectations of colleges?
7. What support is available for teachers?
