According to University of Kansas researcher Jim Knight, the chances of a teacher implementing a new instructional skill in the classroom after a single workshop is about 10%. Add modeling, practice and feedback to that training, and the percentage of implementation only increases to 16-19%. But add coaching to the training, and implementation increases to 95%! It's clear that instructional coaching increases the likelihood of teacher effectiveness, which in turn increases student success.
In the last two years, over 100 educational professionals have gone through the instructional coaching training offered through CESA 8. Our hope is that a vast majority of those trained professionals are doing some type of coaching back in their districts, and we'd like to support their work. To that end, we are forming an Instructional Coaches Network for the CESA 8 area.
The purpose of the instructional coaches network is to advance coaches’ skills in coaching techniques and leadership skills to increase their effectiveness in their districts. The network will also provide opportunities for collegial conversations between instructional coaches. To accomplish this, instructional coaches will meet four times during the school year to participate in professional development and roundtable discussions with regards to their role as coaches. The Instructional Coaches Regional Network will be facilitated by ICF certified life and leadership coach Laura Gleisner.
