Description

Gender inclusive schools are schools that support all students, including transgender and gender expansive students.  The first half of this workshop will help you gain an understanding of the complex dimensions of gender, including key terminology and concepts related to gender.  It will also provide you with perspectives from children, youth, and families about their own gender, and introduce a framework for Gender Inclusive Schools and practices that will support all students.  The second half moves from perspectives to practice, and offers specific steps and strategies that individuals and schools can implement to create greater acceptance of gender diversity for all students

Learning Objectives:

·         Learn the differences and interconnectedness among biological sex, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation.

·         Understand the experiences of transgender and gender expansive students in schools.

·         Gain a framework for understanding the expansiveness of gender and how that is limited by the gender binary framework of most schools and communities.

·         Learn Tier 1 practices that normalize, protect,  and support gender diversity among students and adults.

·         Learn Tier 2 practices that specifically provide extra support for transgender and gender expansive students.

·         Learn Tier 3 strategies to support transgender students and their families through social transitions and issues related to that process.
