From origin stories to contemporary struggles over treaty rights and sovereignty issues, Patty Loew will reflect on events and initiatives of the 21st century that impact our Native communities and present a distinctly different view of history. Dr. Loew will share information from her two books, Indian Nations of Wisconsin: Histories of Endurance and Renewal and Native People of Wisconsin which include compact tribal histories of the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Oneida, Menominee, Stockbridge-Munsee, Ho-Chunk, and Brothertown Indians. Participants will also have the opportunity to reflect on how historical events are discussed in our schools. Please join us for a day rich in dialogue, reflection and learning about the unique cultural traditions, tribal history and life today for each nation.

By attending this training, participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of tribal histories of the Wisconsin Indian Tribal Nations.
  • Examine how American historical events are discussed in schools.
  • Reflect on the appropriateness of instructional materials that are written to provide a historical perspective of the Native American people.

Presenter:
Patty Loew, Ph.D., is an enrolled member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. She is a professor in the Department of Life Sciences Communication at UW-Madison and affiliated faculty with the American Indian Studies Program. For twenty years she hosted statewide news and public affairs programs for Wisconsin Public Television.

Participants will be given a complimentary copy of either Patty Loew’s book, Indian Nations of Wisconsin (2013) or Native People of Wisconsin (2015).
