STEM Series

This series of workshops addresses the need to bring science education into the next generation by aligning science and engineering practices education with the comprehensive reforms underway in English/language arts and mathematics.  Using the recommendations in  "A Framework for K-12 Science Education" by the National Research Council, we’ll develop the ability to engage students in the processes of science and engineering to learn rigorous, comprehensive, and overarching science

content while aligning to the Common Core State Standards in English/ELA and mathematics.  These workshops are appropriate for both elementary and high school educators and administrators

Workshop 1: Introduction to "A Framework for K-12 Science Education" by the National Research Council

10/16/2015
9 AM - 3:30 PM

  • Participants will understand the shifts to science education recommended by the National Research Council (2012).  We’ll also investigate how the Next Generation Science Standards were developed to distill those recommendations into a practical set of guidelines for districts to use as a basis during science curriculum alignment and revision. In addition, participants will understand how growth mindset, connections to math and ELA, and culturally responsive practices should be infused in STEM education.

Workshop 2: Vertical Integration of Science Education from K through 12
11/19/15
9 AM-3:30 PM

  • District science leader teams will be guided in the process of beginning to vertically integrate science instruction from Kindergarten through 12th grade.  We’ll understand how conceptual mapping throughout a student’s science education will support accelerated achievement at every grade level.  In addition, participants will understand how to infuse growth mindset, connections to math and ELA, and culturally responsive practices into STEM education.

Workshop 3: Student-Centered Science and Engineering in Elementary Classrooms
1/15/16
9 AM-3:30 PM

  • In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to provide students with experiences in science and engineering practices which allow for student choice and autonomy in the learning process.  You'll learn how to use these experiences to engage students in literacy and mathematics.

Workshop 4: Student-Centered Science and Engineering in High School Classrooms
2/18/16
9 AM -3:30 PM

  • In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to provide students with experiences in science and engineering practices which allow for student choice and autonomy in the learning process.  You'll learn how to use these experiences to engage students in literacy and mathematics.

  • Participants will have a clear understanding of the differences between scientific inquiry, active learning, and engineering practices.

  • Teachers will experience science practices and engineering design principles as they can be applied to their science classrooms.

  • Participants will discover how engaging students in science practices and engineering principles supports the Common Core State Standards in both Mathematics and English/Language Arts.

  • Participants will have collaborative conversations with colleagues from surrounding districts, creating a network of professional contacts that will be useful as a science leader in home districts.

Cost: $75 per participant, per workshop for CESA 8 - CIA member school Districts. $150 per participant, per workshop for all others.
