Augmentative and Alternative Communication Basics - “Finding Their Voice – Exploring Solutions for Communication Disorders”

Do you have a student who cannot communicate or does not communicate well? This workshop will provide information on use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for the student with communication delays and disorders. What is AAC? What type of student can benefit from AAC? How do I start the referral process in order to access an evaluation?  A review of assessment, how to choose a device, implementation of the device into the classroom and the student’s routines, and review of low-tech AAC to high-tech AAC devices and access methods will be addressed. Participants will complete the workshop with an understanding of what AAC is and what types of students may benefit, how to initiate evaluation, how to implement use of AAC in order to increase student participation in the classroom, and the opportunity for hands-on learning of communication devices and access methods from Tobii Dynavox, Saltillo Corporation and Prentke Romich company representatives.

Who should attend: Special Education Teachers, Speech Language Pathologists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Special Education Directors, Paraprofessionals
