The Next Generation Science Standards includes three foundational dimensions: Disciplinary Core Ideas, Cross-cutting Concepts, and Science and Engineering Practices. This workshop will focus on practical incorporation of engineering design into a traditional or inquiry curriculum in all science classrooms.

Objectives and Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will have a clear understanding of the differences between scientific inquiry, active learning, and engineering practices.
  • Teachers will experience engineering design principals as they can be applied to their science classrooms.
  • Participants will discover how engaging students in the engineering practices of the NGSS supports the Common Core State Standards in both Mathematics and English/Language Arts.
  • Participants will have collaborative conversations with colleagues from surrounding districts, creating a network of professional contacts that will be useful as a leader in home districts.
  • Teachers will understand how the active learning inherent in engineering design reflects on educator effectiveness through the Danielson Framework.

Who Should Attend?

  • Middle and high school science teachers interested in implementing the engineering practices of the NGSS
  • Elementary teachers who want to engage their students in the NGSS engineering practices
  • K-12 educators wanting to connect their engineering practices to the CCSS
  • K-12 educators concerned about implementing the NGSS while also trying to manage Educator Effectiveness
  • Administrators not familiar with engineering design and active learning classrooms which will be part of your observation duties
