This session is a 4-day series:
September 15, 2014
November 7, 2014
January 26, 2015
February 26, 2015

How successful are your students at innovative thinking, creative writing, expressive speaking and reading for evidence? Join others in a 4-day collaborative series to explore how disciplinary literacy strategies enhance the teaching of your content area.

Tentative Outline:
Day One – Unit Writing and Assessments (Performance Tasks)
All teachers share the responsibility of preparing students for the literacy skills necessary to be ready for college and career.  Curriculum in the content areas will need to promote reading, writing, listening, speaking, and the critical thinking practices necessary to be considered knowledgeable and literate in each discipline. Formative and summative performance tasks which require the application of those literacy skills will need to be an integral part of that curriculum.  This session will provide the opportunities to assess current curriculum and include literacy-rich practices and assessments.
Day Two – Focus on Complex Text and Resources
Content area teachers will need to understand and use the defining characteristics of complex text in order to select appropriate materials.  Teachers will also need to understand the literacy demands and nuances of their disciplines so that they can select the learning strategies most useful for supporting students who are developing those literacy skills.
Day Three – Workshop Models for Teaching
Through the use of scaffolding, modeling, and the gradual release of responsibility model, content teachers can provide the guided support needed for students to develop literacy skills.  Reading and writing workshops offer a way to shift the responsibility of literacy learning to the students.
Day Four – Writing in Your Content Area
Every content discipline can provide opportunities for students to write arguments, informational/explanatory texts, and narratives.  Teachers need to design the writing experiences and assessments that are relevant and authentic in furthering content literacy in their discipline.

Cost: $300 for 4 days - includes lunch and materials
